Contextual Learning
For maximum contextual learning, first watch and see what you intend on learning, without any specific attention or note-taking. This gives you a cursory overview and basis for that which you want to learn. There will be little things that your mind remembers/learns that you aren't aware of.
Then, repeat the information with attention to the items you intend on learning. You'll find that the things you picked up in the first step are like bridges connecting your existing knowledge with the new information. You will find that by doing this concepts connect more deeply, have better retention, and (perhaps most importantly) become methods to further subsequent learning rather than just plain facts.
I have used this approach many times over the past years in homeschooling, teaching, and training. It really works well, if the student is willing to relax and simply let their brain accept what is being presented to them. So many times, however, people put so much pressure on themselves to "learn" something that they miss so much of what they could really be learning.
The brain is an amazing thing and has a inherent, natural, and permanent ability/need to learn. Don't force it to take in only the facts you think it needs. Instead, just let it do what it does best: assimilate information in the way it deems most appropriate to accomplish the goals you have given it. To do this, use a contextual learning approach.
Given the previous information, it would seem that each time someone has an experience, they receive an exponential benefit since they both (a) learn new information as well as (b) learn ways to assimilate future information. I call this learning to learn.
The best way I know to accomplish this is through homeschooling (whether formally, casually, or as an adjunct to private/public schooling) which gives the learner the chance to experience learning in the way that most closely matches their previous experiences (learning style). The amazing benefits of contextual learning cannot be realized in a traditional classroom where memorization of facts is the primary objective.
Notice that I haven't referred to the learner as a child because this contextual learning is of benefit to everyone, at every age. Try it today and see for yourself.
